Pre-wedding and Post-wedding Rituals
1. ROSHI
Roshi is a pre-wedding ritual where in a clay pot is tied with mango leaves around it and kept on the chul/roshi ( mud/clay stove). Before preparing all the food for the Jevonn or Bhikria jevonn. Then some coins are thrown into the pot followed by the prayer, where special prayers for the people preparing the food and the ancestors of the house.
Jevonn (lunch) or Bhikria Jevonn is served to the old or poor while praying for the ancestors of the house. While they consume the food on behalf of the ancestors.
2. DOSH (doce)
Dosh making is a pre-wedding ritual... doce is prepared at the Groom's house Bride's house and also at the uncle's (Mother's brother) house. The bride's doce comes to the Groom's house when the Dennem (dowry) and Vojem Ritual is followed.
Vojem
Vojem is sent by the family of the bride and is to be distributed to the family, friends and the villagers of the groom's village, as a token of gratitude once the wedding has ended. vojem traditionally is a platter of Goan sweets such as bol, doce and a banana.
3. SADDO
Saddo is a fancy white cloth with red flowers printed on it given by the Uncle of the bride (Mother's brother) which is then cut on any day before the Roce Day... and then stitched into a beautiful dress, worn by the bride after coming to the groom's house after the wedding day reception.
4. PORKUNDD
Porkundd is a ritual that takes place a day before the roce day where in the groom is taken to his uncle's (Mother's brother) house.
Where the Uncle's wife fetches well water and the groom drinks it by the hands of his Uncle. This means a gesture of gratefulness and thankfulness towards the Uncle. Followed by prayers and then lunch at the Uncle's place.
5. ROCE
The Roce ceremony is a pre-wedding ritual in Goan Catholic weddings, equivalent to the Haldi ceremony, where the bride and groom are anointed with coconut milk and oil, symbolizing purification and blessing before the wedding.
The ceremony often begins with prayers, followed by the application of coconut milk by family members, friends, and neighbors.
The Roce ceremony is a way for the bride and groom to be blessed and prepared for their new lives together, and it's a time for families and friends to come together and celebrate.
While the core tradition remains, modern additions like eggs, beer, shampoo, and milk are sometimes added for fun.
